THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!

Our Volunteers Made the BC Provincials a Roaring Success!

Over 180 enthusiastic volunteers, from the member and non-member base, showed up to help over the course of the four-day Provincials tournament from July 24 - 27. They ranged in age from 12 – 92 and all were sporting smiles, greeting people, and making our club proud!

The tournament was held at our club as well as at the Creekside courts in Coldstream on Saturday for Mixed Doubles. The weather was perfect, and the vibe was exciting as players vied for medals while showing off great skills and making new friends! 580 competitors played in five event categories (Singles (M/W), Doubles (M/W) and

Mixed doubles) with many competitors playing in multiple events. There were 62 different brackets (skill and age levels) with close to 1500 games played on the 30 courts over the four days. Players came from all corners of BC, from Massett (Haida Gwaii) - Cranbrook, Terrace to Victoria, Surrey to Quesnel. Several professional players also made an appearance competing at the event, leading to some very exciting, high-level play!

We had thirty-six referees working hard to ensure fairness in all play. Richard Chambers, tournament chair, highlighted proudly that this was also a historic event as it is the first time that any province has been able to run a provincial championship (with more than 500 players) and have all accredited referees be from the home province. Previously, referees were required to come from other provinces to provide the necessary numbers. Kudos to BC

refs!

A HUGE thank you to the Tournament Committee for all of the meticulous planning and implementation. Thank you to our generous sponsors who helped make this a success. And a tremendous shout out of gratitude for our volunteers who showed up. Some for days, some for important shifts, and others who answered the call when extra help was needed. A tournament like this could not have been this successful without all of you!

We really do have a caring community at our club! It is fun to volunteer, be part of the “family” and even better, to hear the players from away complimenting our club so highly! We have something to be so proud of!

Thank you!

Diane Brochu, VPA Secretary

Thank You... BC Referees !

We are extremely proud of the fact that this was the first time in pickleball history a provincial tournament contained referees all from the same province. This was largely due to the hard work VPA has placed in training local referees in the Okanagan area. Congrats to our very own Roberta Booth-Blackwell for qualifying as a Level 2 Referee! So proud of our B.C. Referees!
